Before the cipher. Before the block knew their names. Before any of it meant anything to anyone else, there were five people becoming exactly who they were born to be.
🎧 DJ Boogie Lou — The First Element: DJing
His Aunt Martha named him. She was watching him in the living room, three years old, moving to a 45 playing on the record player; a song called Boogaloo Supreme and she laughed so hard she had to sit down.
"That boy is straight Boogie Lou," she said.
The name outlasted the song. The groove never left.
🎤 MC Jeli — The Second Element: MCing
Her government name is Seraphina the fiery one, of the seraphim, the angels who stand closest to the divine and whose presence is so overwhelming it requires them to cover their own faces.
She goes by Jeli in the cipher. She has never told anyone which language it comes from or exactly what it means.
"If you need to know the etymology," she said once, "you haven't been listening to what I'm saying."
💃 Maya — The Third Element: B-Girling
Maya Delgado-Osei was born in the Bronx to a Filipino mother and a Ghanaian father, and she carries both ancestries in her movement. The fluid, grounded vocabulary of Sayaw lives in her footwork. The power of her freezes holds something older than she can name.
She found b-girling at twelve and understood immediately that it was the same conversation her body had always been trying to have; just in a language the block could witness.
🖊️ Scrito — The Fourth Element: Graffiti
Escritor. Writer. His tag name is the thing itself. No metaphor, no alias, no costume.
Marcos Villanueva is sixteen years old and has been writing on walls since he was thirteen, when he decided that invisibility was a declaration of war and aerosol paint was his only available weapon.
☯️ Asé — The Fifth Element: Knowledge of Self
Tall. Locs that carry the weight of unspoken histories. Eyes that have already arrived at the answer you're still afraid to ask.
He hails from parts unknown. A deliberate mystery, even to those closest to him; though his cadence carries the lilt of Jamaica, and certain OGs in the Bronx lower their voice when they say his name.
